The path to successful project delivery starts in the pre-design phase and is linked to four primary disciplines of cost engineering or project controls: cost estimating and management, planning and scheduling, risk management, and claims avoidance/forensic analysis/dispute resolution. Integrating these disciplines into the design and construction process improves benchmark plans, ensures adequate budgets and schedules, and provides consistent deliverables to enhance the quality of the effort. This process significantly improves deliverables and analysis results.
This effort is based on seven phases of a project: pre-design, schematic design, detailed design, design for construction, bid/tender document development, construction, and post-construction. These phases align with front-end loading and the front-end engineering design commonly used in the process world and with any type of project design effort. The importance of design scheduling has been previously highlighted, and this process integrates that concept with full cost engineering/project controls support.
This presentation will explain this process in detail, providing additional insight and guidance to successfully implement a fully integrated phase-gate project controls and design/construction effort.
